Reduce your carbon footprint & become more Energy Efficient

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced – it is measured in units of carbon dioxide. It is a conceptual notion which allows people and bodies to measure the potential environmental damage of their actions.

There are many ways for each of us to reduce our carbon footprints. Generally speaking, the most impactful thing each of us can do to cut our carbon footprint is to reduce or eliminate our daily commutes in automobiles. Another important way to reduce carbon footprints is to become more energy efficient. Every person and business has unique consumptive patterns. Try to be conscious of your energy consumption. Review your energy bills and compare usage to previous years. Most utility companies have graphs on your bill comparing your consumption levels month to month and sometimes year to year.

It is important to identify both high impact activities and actions that are easy to achieve. Look for low hanging fruit. Change the light bulbs you use most often first efficient models such as LED or CFL. When it’s time to replace old appliances, especially heating systems, replace these with the most efficient models you can afford.

Next up is to ensure a tight building envelope for your home and/or business. A well insulated building will take significantly less energy to heat and/or cool. Inspect your building insulation, plug drafts, and use quality windows.
