Conergy Australia and Proven Energy announce partnership for small wind turbines

Chew Valley Comprehensive school goes green thanks to low carbon buildings programme

Chew Valley Comprehensive School wanted to lower its carbon footprint and educate a future generation on renewable energy.

The school chose a Proven 11 wind turbine as it wanted maximum visual impact of becoming more eco friendly.  The other objective was to educate its students and the local community on the benefits of renewable energy.

Chew Valley Comprehensive School secured twenty five per cent grant funding through British Gas, framework supplier under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2.  This grant funding is available to all public sector buildings including schools.

Mark Mallett, the Headteacher at Chew Valley School said, “The wind turbine has become both a physical and metaphorical landmark for the school.  Visitors always comment on it.  But much more important is what it symbolizes for our young people – that our resources are finite and the environment in jeopardy.  Chew Valley pupils are learning how important it is that we reduce our carbon footprint.”

Staff, pupils, parents and the local community can learn more about the benefits of renewable energy. Software and a display screen have been installed to show the electricity generated at the present time, since installation, school electricity use and CO2 savings. The school has also organised an Eco Week focusing on energy efficiency within the school.

Craig Jones, Head of Business Development Manager for Proven Energy said “Proven has always believed that by promoting renewable energy in learning facilities we can help model the thinking of the next generation. Through the Phase 2 funding programme the government is helping to support this.”

Besides generating electricity and reducing the school's energy bills, the turbine also provides funding for the school in the form of ROC's, which are being paid double from 1st April. This will mean that the school will have access to an additional £400 per annum which they will plough back into Eco-saving schemes.
