Karen's Energy Takes Her To The Big Apple - April 2007

Karen Coyle is taking a well earned rest after running the 10K charity road race round Central Park in New York. Karen is just back from her very successful fundraising trip to the USA raising an incredible £1,700 through sponsorship which is to benefit the Motor Neurone Disease charity - MND. Motor Neurone Disease leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. Karen chose this charity because Mr Gordon Proven, the founder and Chairman of Proven Energy, who are the world’s leading supplier of small scale wind turbines, has recently been diagnosed with the disease.

The New York run was sponsored by the Scottish Executive in conjunction with the hugely popular Tartan Week. In keeping with the tartan theme, a Scottish village was set up in Grand Central where the local New Yorkers could learn more about the Celtic country steeped in history. Karen got the chance before the race to mingle with some of the locals and she said;

“The New Yorkers were great and loved their Scottish heritage and especially our accents. There were stalls in Central Park giving away Scottish souvenirs and they went down tremendously well.”

Karen ran the 10k in just over 1 hour and had been training 3 or 4 times a week in preparation. After the race she commented;

“It was like running through a film set as Central Park is famous for films being made there. There were also pipers and lots of Scottish music to keep me going and at the end there was a huge Strip the Willow dance done by runners and spectators which was just hilarious! The race was won by an American and a Scot came second by just a second or two”

Karen would like to thank Proven Energy, Rotary Engineering, Aeolus Power, Turbine Services, Sundog, Shetland Wind Power and Solar and Wind Applications for their kind donations and hopes that the money raised will help assist in finding a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
