The idea behind installing the wind turbine is to trial it in Goa, India before relocating it to the Maitri Station in Antarctica. This will make it the third small scale wind turbine installed at the Maitri Station.
A spokesperson from the NCAOR said 'The main driver was to save on fuel and become more environmentally friendly. With the further installation of the Proven 11 wind turbine, the Maitri station would look to save about 60 per cent on the total fuel costs'.
Proven Energy has already installed eight wind turbines for The Polar Foundation, located in Antarctica at the Princess Elisabeth Station in 2008.
