Abernethy Trust recognised the need to implement a renewable energy solution to reduce energy costs, CO2 emissions and promote the green image for the Ardeonaig Centre. The renewable energy source would have to generate high levels of electricity to support accommodation for 54 people and day facilities for up to 80. Safety was also a concern as the wind turbine would be installed close to areas used by the public. Ardeonaig Outdoor Centre offers an exciting choice of indoor and outdoor sporting activities. The Centre supplies accommodation and can be used for businesses, groups or individual activities.
The Abernethy Trust took a proactive approach to green energy and installed two Proven 11 wind turbines. Proven Energy wind turbines were chosen because of their consistent power supply in high or low winds and renowned for being reliable and safe. Another key factor was the ability to import and export energy to the national grid ensuring the Centre has a continuous supply of renewable energy.
The energy costs were reduced by installing two Proven 11wind turbines, which supply up to 24,000kWh of green electricity to the Ardeonaig Outdoor Centre annually. The Centre also benefits from the revenue generated from ROCs (Renewable Obligation Certificates) which allows the centre to sell back excess electricity to an electricity supplier. An educational package was created to inform the public on the advantages of green energy which also helped to promote the Centre’s new green image. This gave the public the opportunity to learn about the benefits of harnessing the wind to generate your own renewable energy.
