Grantsare open to not-for-profit community based organisations in England. Organisations can apply for up to £50,000 or 50% of the project cost (whichever is lower) for installing microgeneration technologies and energy efficiency measures.Project Development grants will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis until all funds are spent.
The Community Sustainable Energy Programme will provide financial assistance to community-based organisations for the installation of microgeneration technologies, such as wind turbines. It will also provide £1 million for project development grants that will help community organisations establish if a microgeneration and energy efficiency installation will work for them.
ST COLUMB GOES GREEN THANKS TO LCBP
The Challenge
St Columb Minor School was involved in an energy management plan that included adopting strategies to conserve energy and become the model school for energy efficiency and renewable energy. This would demonstrate to the local community the schools commitment to develop a more sustainable environment for its children’s future.
The school employed an independent energy consultant to carry out an energy audit. The consultant advised that a wind turbine, solar PV and solar thermal panels would be a suitable solution for the Eco-Schools programme. The school opted for a Proven 11 which would be sited in an exposed location with south prevailing winds to gain maximum energy output. The installation was done by Capture Energy, an installer for Aeolus Power (reseller of Proven Energy wind turbines). 50% grant funding was secured by British Gas, Framework Supplier under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase II.
THE BENEFIT
The school has a 6kW Proven Energy wind turbine that could produce an estimated annual yield of 10,000kWh. This will reduce the school’s CO2 emissions by 4,300kg per year. With all of the renewable energy sources together the school is saving approx 15% on energy costs.
Another benefit of installing renewable solutions is feeding surplus energy back to the national grid to earn extra revenue from ROC’s.
The school invested in a display panel which is positioned in the main entrance. This shows the electricity generated since the wind turbine installation, electricity being generated at the present time and CO2 savings. The wind turbine and display will act as an educational resource in renewable energy for the staff, pupils, parents, visitors and St Columb Minor community.

Community Energy Scotland CARES offers grants to a range of community organisations to help with the installation of a variety of renewable energy technologies. Under CARES there is no set grant funding, the amount of funding awarded is determined on a case by case basis. CARES continues the support available for communities under the previous Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative (SCHRI).

THE NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE TRUST
The National Animal Welfare Trust is a charity that receives no state aid and relies on the generosity of the general public to maintain its work. NAWT’s ambition is to be one of the leading animal welfare charities. This will be achieved raising standards of what it does and providing the best possible environment for the animals that enter their care. To achieve this, the NAWT looked to build a new cost effective, eco-friendly facility. NAWT had to demonstrate a way to use its money wisely which would allow them to save money in the long term.
The new facility was purpose built to house 26 kennels, 20 cat pens, a small animal area and a vet treatment room. Designed to high standards it incorporated cost effective technology like passive inferred lighting systems and high levels of installation.
To support these applications and the general running of the building a hybrid solution including
a Proven 11 wind turbine and solar panels were installed.
The Proven 11 wind turbine was installed by Aeolus Power a reseller for Proven Energy. 50% grant funding was secured by British Gas, Framework Supplier under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2.
Installing the wind turbine and solar panels allow NAWT to decrease energy bills while making a contribution to saving the planet. The money NAWT saves on its electricity costs allows the money given by the public to go to other areas where it’s needed.
Another benefit of installing renewable solutions is feeding surplus energy back to the national grid enabling NAWT to earn extra revenue from double ROC’s.
The new facilities are enjoyed by animals, staff and visiting parties.
