HRH Princess Royal visits Somerset Earth Science Centre

The Somerset Earth Science centre, that has installed a 6kW Proven Energy turbine in the middle of their lake, will be officially opened on 29th July 2009 by HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Anne.

The Earth Science Centre is a new build Zero Energy Development build which boasts a number of educational and environmental features including a Proven 11 which provides the part of the energy for the building.  There were a number of suitable sites to erect the 25 meter turbine but none would provide the visual impact for visitors and students as the centre of the lake.  For this to happen, turbine installers Aeolus Power worked with engineers to construct an island for the turbine to be erected on.

A spokesperson from the Somerset Earth Science Centre said, “This is a very exciting time in the evolution of the centre from its original base at Whatley Quarry where it has been for ten years, and this new building will provide a wonderful facility.”

The Mendip Quarry Producers (who funded the Earth Science Centre project) were successful in achieving 50% funding from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase II.  In addition to the MQP funding, funding was secured from the Somerset Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund and other company sponsors towards the building.
