national animal welfare trust, cornwall

The Challenge

The National Animal Welfare Trust is a charity that receives no state aid and relies on the generosity of the general public to maintain its work.  NAWT’s ambition is to be one of the leading animal welfare charities. This will be achieved raising standards of what it does and providing the best possible environment for the animals that enter their care. To achieve this, the NAWT looked to build a new cost effective, eco-friendly facility.  NAWT had to demonstrate a way to use its money wisely which would allow them to save money in the long term.

The Solution

The new facility was purpose built to house 26 kennels, 20 cat pens, a small animal area and a vet treatment room.  Designed to high standards it incorporated cost effective technology like passive inferred lighting systems and high levels of installation.

To support these applications and the general running of the building a hybrid solution including
a Proven 11 wind turbine and solar panels were installed.

The Proven 11 wind turbine was installed by Aeolus Power a reseller for Proven Energy.  50% grant funding was secured by British Gas, Framework Supplier under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2.

The Benefit

Installing the wind turbine and solar panels allow NAWT to decrease energy bills while making a contribution to saving the planet.  The money NAWT saves on its electricity costs allows the money given by the public to go to other areas where it’s needed.

Another benefit of installing renewable solutions is feeding surplus energy back to the national grid enabling NAWT to earn extra revenue from double ROC’s.

The new facilities are enjoyed by animals, staff and visiting parties.
